Bauxite & alumina: Rusal targeting flame retardants market

Russian alumina and aluminium producer Rusal is planning to invest 500M roubles (US$7.8M) to set up a pilot plant where it will produce fine precipitated aluminium hydroxide to serve the growing flame retardants market. The 5ktpy facility will be installed at Rusal’s Achinsk Alumina Refinery operation in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region.

Roskill view:

This will be the first fine precipitated aluminium hydroxide plant of its kind in Russia. Full capacity is planned by 2021 and production is intended for the domestic market, but more capacity could be added in the future. Global consumption of fine precipitated alumina hydroxide is estimated at around 0.8Mtpy and growing at 4%py.

The largest market for non-met bauxite and alumina is refractories but the industry continues to diversify into speciality aluminas for high-value markets.

For alumina trihydrate, flame retardants, water treatment chemicals and aluminium fluoride are all expected to boost demand in 2019, keeping prices firm. Aluminium fluoride markets are covered in both Roskill’s non-metallurgical bauxite & alumina and Roskill’s fluorspar reports.

Roskill gave a presentation on non-metallurgical bauxite applications and markets at the Fastmarkets IM 25th Bauxite & Alumina Conference in Miami, 25-27 March 2019 ahead of a panel discussion on how a turbulent year has affected the non-met market.

Roskill director Alison Saxby is about to host a round table discussion on industrial minerals markets at Imformed Rendezvous in Paris 8-10 April 2019.

Roskill’s NEW Non-metallurgical bauxite & alumina: Global Industry, Markets & Outlook report will be published in August 2019 and include analysis of supply, demand and prices to 2028. Click here to download the brochure and sample pages or to access further information.
