Salt: World’s largest solar salt operation planned for 2020

Salt field

Hub-Pak of Pakistan plans to develop the largest seawater solar salt operation in the world under a private public partnership with the domestic government. Details of capacity have not been reported but the operation is expected to be around double the size of the current largest (ESSA of Mexico, 8Mtpy) or over 15Mtpy. The project will be based in coastal Pakistan and construction is expected to start in Q1 2020 but no details of the start of production are available. Production will be high grade salt for export to the global chloralkali industry.

Roskill View

This project is potentially an important addition to the global salt industry and would compete directly with Indian producers in the long-distance chemical markets of East Asia and the Middle East. These markets are forecast to grow sufficiently to absorb the extra supply from the project and still require more. Full scale production by the project is unlikely to be reached until perhaps 2025, if construction and commissioning go smoothly.

The 18th edition of the Roskill Salt report, with forecasts to 2028, will be published in November 2019. Roskill will be holding its Salt 2020 conference in May 2020 in Toronto, Canada.
